Haircut Day

Being very pregnant is not conducive to getting much done and one of the things I'd been neglecting before Adelaide's birth was Kyle's hair. It had gotten rather poofy and required a trim. So today, invigorated with the energy I'd lacked in pregnancy, I cut Kyle's hair. He looks very handsome. Here is him posing and showing off his good looks.

The First Week

Well, our first week with Adelaide has been very interesting. At first Meghan couldn't decide what to make of her. She alternated between wanting to hold the baby and wanting the baby to go. Adelaide requires frequent rescuing from her sister's over-eager affections. When Meghan's not squishing her with hugs she's attempting to launch Adelaide from the car seat by jumping on the end of it. I've had to tell her "Get off the Baby!" and "No, Adelaide doesn't want Cheerios!" and "Don't poke your sister with a fork!" Once, I put Adelaide in the crib to keep her safe from Meghan while I was occupied in the restroom. Meghan was very upset about this since the crib is her time-out spot and so attempted to rescue her sister by pulling the blanket Adelaide was lying on until poor Adelaide was pulled right up against the crib bars. Meghan has also decided that she has to try everything that we do with Adelaide. This includes being wrapped up in a blanket and trying out a Binky.

As for Adelaide, she is very relaxed about the whole thing. She's a very particular baby and doesn't like being too cold or too naked or too wet or too hungry or lying too flat. But when everything is just right, she's very pleasant. She also sleeps a lot. And she loves loves loves her Binky. Meghan never wanted a Binky when she was little, but Adelaide enjoys it thoroughly. Her first doctor appointment went well - she already weighs 8 lbs. I haven't got a picture of her with her eyes open yet, but she looks almost Chinese. She's a very cute baby.

Adelaide Irene

We recently welcomed to our family Adelaide Irene Butt! She has her Daddy's eyes, her mommy's round face and a natural mohawk! Adelaide was born Sunday August 24, 2008 at 3:40 AM. She weighed 7 lbs 10 ozs and is 21 inches tall. She is also a succesful VBAC baby!

It was a long labor and probably would have been extremely difficult for me if it wasn't for the miracle of modern medicine. It began Friday morning and progressed through the night. I got very little sleep. Saturday afternoon my water broke and we went to the hospital. I was very reluctant to go earlier because as a VBAC they monitor you more closely. Once there, I learned that I was GBS positive (something my doctor forgot to mention at my visits) and would have to be on anitbiotics. Fortunately, I was also at a four so I had made more progress than with Meghan already. A couple of hours later I was at a five and taking a narcotic to take the edge off the pain.

The doctor decided that since I was irregular and progressing slowly that it was in my best interest to try to speed things up using Pitocin. I was reluctant but tired from the long labor and agreed after discussing with Kyle that it would be OK. Pitocin does make the contractions worse and the narcotic became less and less helpful. They never managed to get my contractions regular and when I was pushing there would be two or three close together and then a long break with everybody waiting and waiting and I would just have to shrug since I couldn't do anything about it.

Around nine the contractions were terrible, I was swearing at poor, loyal Kyle and at a seven. Half an hour later with even worse contractions I was still at a seven. I knew then that transition (from 7 to 10), which is normally comparatively quick (20 - 90 minutes) for most people, was going to be a long process for me like everything else in my labor. I knew that if I didn't get some rest from the pain that I would be too tired to push and probably have to have another cesarean. So at that point, I opted for the epidural. With the pain finally relieved, Kyle and I crashed and slept for hours. I woke at 3 AM feeling strange but finally rested. The contractions felt different then before. So the nurse checked me and I was at a ten! Finally! It was time to push.

Pushing went fairly quickly even though I was still irregular to the nurse's dismay. By 3:40 Adelaide was squalling about the bright, cold place I had dropped her into. A few stitches took care of some small tears and I was all done! Kyle didn't enjoy the pushing part and had a hard time watching. He refused to cut the cord, pointing out that that was why he paid a doctor. I, on the other hand, opted for the mirror and enjoyed watching even when the doctor was sewing me up. He offered to do some decorative stitching like butterflies, but then he would have to sign and date them so I told him that I'd just take the standard type.

I am so grateful I got the opportunity to have my baby vaginally. The pain is different but I am recovering so much faster than with the cesarean. I will also never smile smugly at the epidural again. Not everyone needs help like that, but for those that do, it is a wonderful and useful tool. I don't think I would have made it to the great birth experience that I had without the relief.

Meghan came and visited us at the hospital after church. She thought the baby was lots of fun, although a little gross since it had no teeth. Here are some pictures of her visit.

We got home from the hospital around 8:00 PM on Monday. We are all healthy and happy, if a little tired.

Tropical Storm Fay

This last week was very eventful. It was Kyle and Meghan's very first tropical storm! It started raining Monday evening and is still raining today. Tropical storms are usually no big deal and Florida just gets a bunch of rain and strong winds that pass before too long. However, Fay surprised us all by parking right over Brevard county and dumping nearly 30 inches of rain! It was historic flooding. The boys went to school Monday and had it canceled for the rest of the week because the buses can't get around. We went to visit with Grandma on Wednesday and we ended up staying until Thursday evening because the roads were so badly flooded we didn't want to drive home. It was so flooded Rudy canoed from Grandma's house to his friend's house down the road! Unfortunately there are no pictures of that because no one else was home.

These are pictures of the drive from my house to Grandma's house. Roads were completely covered. We were leaving a wake behind us as we drove. Along US 1 you couldn't see the other side of the Indian River lagoon because the rain was so bad. The park on the corner of Corey and Malabar was so flooded the water came all the way up to the bridge that was built over the ditch.

Grandma's yard was completely flooded. One of her small fishponds overfilled and I wouldn't be surprised if the fish escaped into the yard. It reminded me of when I was young and we would go swimming in the backyard after the big storms. Here are some pictures of Grandma's yard.

And here are pictures from our sleepover. Meghan watched way too much Dora, but there isn't that much to do when you're rained in. We played a lot of cards and Kyle even convinced some people to learn how to play bridge with him.

We returned home last night. The roads were pretty clear from a day a little to no rain (although its raining again today). Our home suffered no damage whatsoever. There was a little water in the patio and a little in the garage, but nothing serious.

Goggles and Superheroes

Meghan found her Daddy's swim goggles. She thought they were lots of fun to wear. Of course, once she took them off, Daddy had to put them on - along with his superhero cape!

Would you like to try them on?

Curly Pig Tails

I've never really done Meghan's hair. I think I tried to put it in a pony tail once or twice but it never really worked. Well, yesterday we bought some small hair ties to make it easier for me and today we put her hair up into pig tails. The results were very cute. Meghan enjoys looking the mirror and feeling her pig tails. I like the pig tails because they show off the curly hair genes that she inherited from her daddy.

Piano Pals

Pony Rides!

We went with Grandma and Sony's girls to the library today and to our surprise there were free pony rides! We got there just in time too because they were closing up shop. So the kids got to brush the ponies and ride on the ponies. It was Meghan's first ever Pony Ride. She loved it. Unfortunately, Daddy couldn't come quickly enough with the camera so we only have some afterward shots. The spotted pony is the one that Meghan rode. Grandma has a cell phone picture of Meghan standing by a pony so we will post that when we figure out how to get it off her phone. We also got some shots of Kaia scooping horse poop. Apparently scooping poop is fun when its not a chore.

Taking a Break With Daddy

Here we are taking a short break from garage sailing on a hot Saturday.

1-2-3...

I feel like I say "One day Meghan just started" a lot, but it is true. She picks things up like flypaper. One day she'll just start doing something I've never seen before, like pretending or recognizing green. In this case, One Day Meghan Just Started Counting. This video is just a small clip of her counting prowess since she wasn't feeling very cooperative. She can count up to 10 and will even alternate numbers with you. She thinks its a fun game. So now we have to start counting objects so she learns the purpose of this string of words.

If You're Happy And You Know It...

One day Meghan started singing "Happy Clap" and we a) had no idea what she was singing and b) where she had picked it up. Eventually we figured out she was singing her version of If You're Happy and You Know It and that she had learned it in Nursery. Once we figured that out, we were ready when she started singing "Snowman, Snowman, Snowman!"

I'm Swimming!

Meghan has been pretending more and more. Here is her swimming at the beach. She asks to go swimming quite often so we got her a little plastic pool for out back. If we are not careful and forget to empty it, the next time we go out Meghan will go swimming with everything on.
